Geoscience Educator of the Month (GEM): Yvonne Chasukwa
Please join us in congratulating Yvonne Chasukwa Mwalwenje as our Geoscience Educator of the Month (March 2026) š!
Yvonne is the Assistant Deputy Head for Academics at Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe, Malawi, a large and respected public school. She is a dedicated geography educator with over 25 years of experience teaching at both primary and secondary levels.
Throughout her career, Yvonne has been committed to strengthening geoscience education through innovative teaching, teacher training, and mentoring young learners. A former member of the IUGS Commission on Geoscience Education (COGE), she has actively contributed to international geoscience education initiatives. She has participated in global training workshops and conferences, including the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Geosciences Information for Teachers Programme and the International Geological Congress. Since 2011, Yvonne has also served as a mentor and jury member of the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), supporting young geoscientists worldwide. Beyond the classroom, Yvonne is passionate about community engagement, environmental education, and youth mentorship through initiatives such as environmental clubs and Girl Guides. Through her involvement with the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, she also promotes environmental justice, helping bring geoscience awareness into community spaces.
