COGE-EOP GeoArt Project

Connecting Art, Creativity, and Geoscience Education

Overview

The GeoArt Project is an initiative that connects artistic expression with geoscience learning. By inviting students, educators, and communities to represent geological processes and landscapes through creative media, GeoArt aims to inspire curiosity, foster Earth literacy, and promote inclusive science communication across cultures.

This initiative is developed under COGE’s Education, Outreach, and Policy (EOP) framework, in collaboration with international partners and regional Field Officers.

Objectives

  • Promote creativity in geoscience learning: Use art as a powerful tool to communicate scientific ideas in accessible and engaging ways.

  • Encourage exploration and reflection: Inspire learners to connect observation, imagination, and storytelling in understanding Earth systems.

  • Highlight cultural and emotional connections: Showcase how people around the world relate to their landscapes and geological heritage.

  • Support educators: Provide resources, workshops, and lesson plans integrating art into classroom and field-based geoscience education.

  • Celebrate creativity globally: Feature artistic works through online and in-person exhibitions that bring science closer to society.

Activities

The GeoArt Project aims to include:

  • Annual GeoArt Contest with categories such as illustration, photography, mixed media, digital art, and classroom projects.

  • Teacher and student workshops on integrating creative methods in geoscience communication.

  • Virtual Gallery showcasing selected artworks and stories from participating regions.

  • Exhibitions and outreach events at conferences, museums, and education forums.
