2025 IUGS-COGE General Assembly – Key Updates & Presentation

We’re glad to share key moments from our 2025 COGE General Assembly, held virtually this past March. The meeting brought together members and collaborators to reflect on recent progress and explore new initiatives for the year ahead.

We were honored to welcome Gary Lewis, former COGE leader, who shared words of encouragement and expressed his enthusiasm for the Commission’s ongoing efforts. We also heard from Rodrigo Gutierrez-Nava, who is applying to become a new Associate Member. Rodrigo is interested in continuing the work of Susana Alaniz, our Publications Leader, who officially stepped down from her role during the meeting. A heartfelt thank you to Susana for her outstanding contributions and years of dedication to COGE!

Our 2024 Report of Achievements and 2025 Activity Plan were formally submitted to IUGS by our chair Sandra Villacorta and presented in Paris by Vice-Chair Susanna Occhipinti, highlighting the Commission’s growing impact and strategic focus.

We also heard important updates from subcommissions and committees:

  • Ongoing efforts to strengthen the Field Officer network, with plans for a Latin America & Caribbean workshop in 2025

  • The upcoming launch of the 2025 Chris King Medal to honor excellence in geoscience education

  • EDI initiatives led by Liliana Corona, including global events for Women and Girls in Science

  • Leadership transitions shared by our General Secretariat and Membership Committee Leader, Anne James

  • New COGE-POC webinars to expand outreach in Latin America and Africa

The Assembly closed with a discussion on boosting COGE’s visibility and fostering stronger international collaborations.

If you’re interested in joining one of our subcommissions or committees, we’d love to hear from you! Please find all the information here and reach out via email at contact_iugscoge@iugscoge.org if you need clarification.

Let’s continue building momentum for geoscience education in 2025 and beyond!
