Celebrating Geoscience Educator of the Month (GEM): Professor Zoltán Unger (Hungary)

We are delighted to recognise Professor Zoltán Unger as COGE’s Geoscience Educator of the Month (GEM) for his outstanding contributions to geoscience education in Hungary.

Professor Unger currently serves at the Nemeskürty István Teacher Training Centre, Ludovika University of Public Service, where he also contributes to the Environmental PhD School. Previously, at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), he became widely recognised for transforming the teaching of mineralogy and petrography through innovative, student-centred learning approaches.

Understanding that many students find the theoretical foundations of mineralogy challenging, Professor Unger developed an iterative teaching methodology that encourages learners to revisit key concepts through lectures, independent study and structured revision. His innovative two-stage assessment approach—combining examinations with and without supporting materials—helps students develop both conceptual understanding and the confidence to apply their knowledge in real-world situations.

Through his commitment to active learning, critical thinking and continuous improvement, Professor Unger has inspired generations of students and demonstrated how thoughtful educational practice can strengthen geoscience learning.
