šŸŒŽ GEM of the Month – October 2025 Dr. Susana Alicia Alaniz Ɓlvarez (Mexico)

The IUGS Commission on Geoscience Education (COGE) proudly recognizes Dr. Susana Alaniz as our GEM (Geo-Educator of the Month) for October 2025.

Dr. Alaniz is a senior researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she has devoted nearly four decades to advancing Earth science education, innovation, and outreach.

Through her celebrated collection ā€œSimple Experiments to Understand a Complicated Earthā€ for children and young readers, Dr. Alaniz has transformed how students and teachers engage with physics and geoscience—bringing hands-on experimentation into classrooms and inspiring curiosity about how our planet works. Her educational materials and book collections are freely available at šŸ‘‰ https://tellus.geociencias.unam.mx/index.php/serie/

A passionate advocate for accessible and creative science learning, Dr. Alaniz has also developed innovative educational software tools (ReActiva, SSLIPO, Trudisp, and Slicken) that make structural geology interactive and engaging.

Her leadership extends to editorial excellence and international collaboration: she founded and directed the Journal of Teaching and Communication of Geosciences and has served as editor for several major journals, including Episodes—the IUGS Journal. Dr. Alaniz also contributed to COGE as Publications Leader (2022–2025), playing a key role in strengthening the Commission’s communication and outreach efforts.

šŸ‘ We celebrate Dr. Susana Alaniz as a true GEM—whose creativity, rigor, and dedication have inspired generations of learners and strengthened geoscience education in Latin America and beyond.
