🌍 GEM of the Month – August 2025: Luisa Pinto (Chile)
The IUGS Commission on Geoscience Education (COGE) is proud to recognize Luisa Pinto as our GEM (Geo-Educator of the Month) for August 2025 
Dr. Pinto is a distinguished professor at the University of Chile in Santiago, where she also earned one of her two PhDs in Geology—alongside a PhD in Earth Sciences from Paul Sabatier University in France.
Her expertise spans syntectonic sedimentation, tectonic geomorphology, and regional geology, and she currently leads cutting-edge research on tectonic fault activity and mountain formation in Central Chile.
A passionate advocate for geoethics, Dr. Pinto works to promote ethical and responsible geoscience practices across Chile and the broader Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region.
She is also a creative educator: her iGea Program and Delta Initiative at the University of Chile aim to integrate sustainability, flexibility, and innovative thinking into Earth science education.
We celebrate Dr Pinto as a true GEM—bridging research, ethics, and educational innovation to advance geoscience in Latin America and beyond.
