Geoscience Education Field Officer Program

In 2019, the IUGS and EGU began a new initiative to appoint Geoscience Education Field Officers (GEFO) and train them. The GEFO program was established and managed by Professor Chris King until 2021.

The EGU Education group is seeking every year to expand the initiative and call additional GEFO in European countries and COGE has under taken to establish Field Officers in non-European locations.

In May 2022, following a call from EGU Education, the GEFO initiative was expanded to seven additional European countries. New GEFOs including seven supported by COGE were trained at a workshop led by the EGU GEFOs at Barcelona, Spain between 28 and 29 of May.

GEFO role

The major role of the field officers is providing professional development through interactive workshops for teachers who have elements of geoscience in their teaching curriculum. GEFO are unpaid, but their training workshop expenses are supported.

The current Coordinator of the GEFO Program is Susanna Occhipinti and she leads the actions under the GEFO policy in coordination with the EGU Education Chair Jean-Luc Berenguer.
